If it wouldn't be terribly improper of him to lose his composure then he might have felt his eyes watering for her. It's a horror story. And she lived through it. There are no sentiments he can offer for that, no experience he could possibly compare to it. He feels rather lost, horrified for her and wanting to comfort her but having no idea how to.

His hand moves to touch her arm in some display of compassion, but he gets awkward halfway through and pulls it back again. Instead he deflates and watches her sadly. "I... I'm sorry. I really am. That... That's terrible, it's awful. No one should have to go through something like that."
